Unnecessary Eye Exposure to Sunrays

The benefits of wearing sunglasses are numerous – ranging from the latest accessory trends to important eye care health. The importance of sunscreen dominates many health articles, as more people are attempting to prevent skin cancer from developing. However, in an intriguing study, nearly 50-percent of Americans did not realize the importance of wearing sunglasses, assuming they were simply trendy accessories. In fact, nearly 27-percent of people reported not wearing sunglasses.

Several health-related issues can arise from exposing the eyes to damaging UVA and UVB rays.

  1. Skin Cancer – Nearly 10-percent of all skin cancers are located on the eyelid.
  2. Macular Degeneration – Over a significant period, UV light may actually increase the potential for macula lutea damage. This area of the eye comprises light-sensing cells, which allows people to focus more clearly on fine details. If macular degeneration occurs, people experience vision loss and blurriness.
  3. Cataracts – Reports suggest that approximately 900,000 people are legally blind due to cataracts. Cataracts are responsible for causing cloudiness in the eyes and are often triggered by excessive UV exposure.
  4. Photokeratitis – This is defined as sunburn to the eye, which  typically heals within 48 hours. Symptoms include pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision and the feeling that sand is rubbing the eye.
  5. Pteryglum – Known as surfer's eye, this condition is caused by abnormal eye tissue growth. This condition can occur in the corners or across the white parts of the eyes, likely leading to altered vision and possibly inflammation.

For people that have difficulty with glare, polarized lenses offer clarity and glare protection. This is especially true for summertime beach trips, where glare can compromise vision. Photochromic lenses offer transitional changes, which are especially helpful with light fluctuations. These types of glasses offer the convenience of all-day wear without the hassle of removing sunglasses in dark light conditions. These are excellent options for people that wear glasses and may not qualify for contact lenses, but still desire the benefits of having much-needed UVA and UVB protection.

Investing in a pair of high-quality sunglasses is necessary to ensure proper UVA and UVB protection. Just because sunglasses have tinted lenses does not mean that they offer the necessary protection to protect against the aforementioned conditions.
